Frequently asked questions
Applies to Dungeon Architect 3.7 · Unreal Engine
Short answers to common questions about Dungeon Architect for Unreal Engine. Each one links to the page with the full steps.
Can Dungeon Architect generate levels at runtime?
Section titled “Can Dungeon Architect generate levels at runtime?”Yes. Dungeon Architect can build a new level every time the game starts, not just in the editor. The
Build System builds the dungeon when the game starts and spawns the
player inside it. Check Randomize Seed On Build on the dungeon actor for a different dungeon on every play.
To build from your own Blueprint instead, set a new seed on the dungeon actor’s config and call build, as shown in Randomize Dungeons.
Does Dungeon Architect build the same level every time?
Section titled “Does Dungeon Architect build the same level every time?”With the same seed, yes. Dungeon Architect builds a layout from a seed, and the same seed always gives the same level on every machine. Change the seed for a new layout; keep it to keep the one you like. See Same seed, same level.
Is multiplayer supported in Dungeon Architect?
Section titled “Is multiplayer supported in Dungeon Architect?”Yes. In a multiplayer game, the Dungeon Architect Build System builds the dungeon on the server and sends only its seed to every client, so each client builds the exact same dungeon locally. No level geometry is sent over the network. It waits for every player to finish building, catches up players who join late, and then spawns each player.
It needs no extra setup beyond the single player steps: with Play As Listen Server and a few players, every window
builds the same dungeon. Players who are still building can wait in an optional
lobby.
The Multiplayer Sample is a complete networked example with a server browser, a lobby with a live layout preview, and late join.
Does Dungeon Architect support dedicated servers?
Section titled “Does Dungeon Architect support dedicated servers?”In multiplayer, the Dungeon Architect Build System has the server build the dungeon and send its seed to the clients (see the multiplayer answer above).
Dungeon Architect voxel worlds also work on dedicated servers with no setup. Voxel density is generated on the GPU by
default, and dedicated servers, -nullrhi runs and commandlets have no renderer, so they fall back to a CPU path
that runs the same math. The server builds the same voxel world as its clients. See
Dedicated Servers for the console variables that override this.
Does Dungeon Architect integrate with the PCG framework?
Section titled “Does Dungeon Architect integrate with the PCG framework?”Yes. Unreal Engine’s PCG framework can read the markers that Dungeon Architect places on a layout and scatter decoration on top, such as candles along a table or mushrooms on a cave floor. Dungeon Architect builds the structure; PCG adds the decoration. See PCG Integration.
Can Dungeon Architect use my own art?
Section titled “Can Dungeon Architect use my own art?”Yes. A Dungeon Architect theme decides which of your meshes, lights, Blueprints and props go on each marker of the layout. Swap the theme and the same layout gets a new look. See How It Works and Design your first theme.
Can I design the rooms myself instead of generating them?
Section titled “Can I design the rooms myself instead of generating them?”Yes. Block out the rooms yourself, give them any theme, and Dungeon Architect’s Snap Grid Flow or Snap Map builder stitches them together into a new layout every time. See Stitched levels: rooms you design.
Do AI characters get a navigation mesh on generated levels?
Section titled “Do AI characters get a navigation mesh on generated levels?”Yes. Unreal Engine can rebuild the navigation mesh at runtime once you set
Edit > Project Settings > Navigation Mesh > Runtime to Dynamic. Place a Nav Mesh Bounds Volume large enough to cover the whole dungeon. Snap Grid Flow and Snap
Map dungeons that use level streaming need one more flag on the dungeon actor. See
Navigation.
Does Dungeon Architect work with the Game Animation Sample?
Section titled “Does Dungeon Architect work with the Game Animation Sample?”Yes. The Build System setup works with Epic’s Game Animation Sample, for a fully animated character in a generated dungeon. See the video in With the Game Animation Sample.
How do I install Dungeon Architect?
Section titled “How do I install Dungeon Architect?”Install Dungeon Architect from the Fab Library in the Epic Games Launcher (Install to Engine), then enable it
in your project under Edit > Plugins. See Installation.
Is there a Unity version of Dungeon Architect?
Section titled “Is there a Unity version of Dungeon Architect?”Yes. Dungeon Architect for Unity has its own docs, starting at the Unity overview. The Unity and Unreal Engine versions have different features, so use the docs for your engine.
Where can I get help with Dungeon Architect?
Section titled “Where can I get help with Dungeon Architect?”Ask on the Dungeon Architect Discord server. See Discord support for how to join. When upgrading from an older version, check Upgrading first.
